According to a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/69\/wr\/mm6943a3.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report<\/a>, telehealth visits with healthcare providers increased 154 percent between March 2019 and March 2020 primarily due to limitations of in-person interactions due to COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To address these health care delivery shifts, and to discuss ways in which these changes provide opportunities for improved healthcare delivery, the Northern Arizona University <a href=\"https:\/\/legacy.nau.edu\/center-community-health-engaged-research\/\">Center for Community Health and Engaged Research<\/a> (CHER), the <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/azdhs.gov\/biomedical\/\" target=\"_blank\">Arizona Biomedical Research Centre<\/a>, and the <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.arizota.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Arizona Occupational Therapy Association<\/a> will offer an online conference, <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.com\/e\/telerehabilitation-and-telepractice-an-interprofessional-conference-tickets-135946719297\" target=\"_blank\">Telerehabilitation and Telepractice: An Interprofessional Conference to Build Connections and Best Practices<\/a> on March 4 and 5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.com\/e\/telerehabilitation-and-telepractice-an-interprofessional-conference-tickets-135946719297\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">online event<\/a> is Thursday, March 4, 11:45 a.m.\u20135 p.m. and Friday, March 5, noon\u20133:30 p.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe purpose of the conference is to discuss trends and best practices in telepractice and telerehabilitation across multiple disciplines, including nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech language pathology,\u201d said <strong>Lynda Ransdell<\/strong>, professor with the <a href=\"https:\/\/legacy.nau.edu\/health-sciences\/\">Department of Health Sciences<\/a> and CHER.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe will have some of the best experts in the country talking about how telepractice has changed this year, we will discuss a case study in interprofessional groups, and in the last session, conference-goers will have the opportunity to ask the panelists questions,\u201d Ransdell added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The conference is approved by the Arizona Speech-Language Hearing Association, which is approved by the Continuing Education Board of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association to provide continuing education activities in speech-language pathology and audiology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are offering continuing education credits for speech language pathologists, occupational therapists and physical therapists, so we anticipate much of our audience will consist of professionals who need CEUs,\u201d Ransdell said. \u201cIn addition, this conference is designed for individuals interested in expanding interprofessional education and practice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Conference speakers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Thursday afternoon event will feature <strong>Ellen R. Cohn<\/strong>, editor, author and professor, University of Pittsburgh, whose lecture is titled \u201cAn Introduction to Telepractice in 2020.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of her presentation, Cohn will review a procedure to conduct safe telepractice and teach attendees how to identify a privacy concern relevant to telepractice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The afternoon will also include a presentation from <strong>Emi Isaki<\/strong>, professor, NAU Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, on \u201cTelepractice in 2021: The Arizona Clinical Experience and Best Practice.\u201d Isaki will discuss the requirements of speech-language pathologists who engage in telepractice while residing in the state of Arizona, licensure requirements, clinical exemplars and best practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a break, <strong>Alan Lee<\/strong>, professor, Mount St. Mary\u2019s University, will discuss \u201cPhysical Therapy: Advancement of Telehealth and Digital Practice in Physical Therapy, and<strong> Janet Bettger<\/strong>, associate professor and health services researcher, Duke University, will present \u201cTo Scale or Not to Scale: Do We have the Building Blocks to Answer this Question for Telerehabilitation?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Goris Hung<\/strong>, pediatric therapist and student mentor at Hong Kong Polytechnical University, and Jana Cason, professor, Spaulding University, will then explore \u201cStepping into a New Era \u2014 Fundamentals and Efficacy of Telehealth in Occupational Therapy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Friday, <strong>Liz Greenberg<\/strong> and <strong>Ambur Lindstrom-Mette<\/strong>, both associate clinical professors at NAU in Tucson in the nursing program, will present \u201cRisk Management: Lessons Learned from Telehealth in Nursing\u201d followed by a case study and panel discussion. Lindstrom-Mette is also the director of the NAU Tucson nursing program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A full description of the speakers is available online as well as a detailed conference agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have some of the most well-respected speakers in the country in their disciplines,\u201d Ransdell said. \u201cFrom them, we hope that attendees will learn about current trends, best practices, and interprofessional education and practice relative to telehealth, telepractice, telerehabilitation and more.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The conference had a 200 registrant limit.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>COVID-19 may present opportunities for improving healthcare delivery.
