
{"id":3697,"date":"2021-05-03T15:03:35","date_gmt":"2021-05-03T22:03:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nau.edu\/center-health-equity-research\/?p=3697"},"modified":"2024-07-01T16:12:26","modified_gmt":"2024-07-01T23:12:26","slug":"navajo-maternal-child-health-workshop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/legacy.nau.edu\/center-community-health-engaged-research\/blog\/navajo-maternal-child-health-workshop\/","title":{"rendered":"Authors examine the implications of the Navajo Maternal and Child Health Needs Assessment at May 6 workshop"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/legacy.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/234\/ARWaters.jpg\" alt=\"Two girls and their mother wear dresses while standing on reservation outdoor land.\" class=\"wp-image-12829\" width=\"486\" height=\"648\" srcset=\"https:\/\/legacy.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/234\/ARWaters.jpg 480w, https:\/\/legacy.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/234\/ARWaters-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 486px) 100vw, 486px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>For the first time, the Arizona Department of Health Services included the Navajo Nation in their 2020 Arizona Maternal Child Health Needs Assessment report, which is produced by the Bureau of Women\u2019s and Children\u2019s Health every five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On May 6, 11a.m.\u20131:30 p.m., in an online workshop, the authors of the first Navajo Nation-specific Maternal and Child Health Assessment that was included in the Arizona Department of Health Services report will discuss their approaches for collecting meaningful data from Navajo mothers and healthcare professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers from <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dinecollege.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Din\u00e9 College<\/a> and Northern Arizona University, assisted by the Navajo Nation Epidemiology Center and the Navajo Nation Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS), produced the 72-page report in November last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis needs assessment was a collaborative effort on and off the Navajo Nation, and with support from these partners, we\u2019re able to continue to work toward addressing the needs established in this report,\u201d said <strong>Amber-Rose Waters<\/strong> Navajo Maternal Child Health needs assessment coordinator, Din\u00e9 College. \u201cI\u2019m honored to be able to work on a project such as this being a Navajo woman and mother. The goal is to engage partners at every level to improve the health of the future generations and this workshop is part of that process.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two institutes of higher education are part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/legacy.nau.edu\/center-community-health-engaged-research\/navajo-native-american-research-center-for-health-partnership\/\">Navajo Native American Research Center for Health<\/a> (NARCH), which is led by Din\u00e9 College in collaboration Northern Arizona University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/legacy.nau.edu\/center-community-health-engaged-research\/\">Center for Community Health and Engaged Research<\/a> (CHER).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the workshop, the report team will present the challenges they met while retrieving and collecting data, the main findings of the report, their dissemination plans, and the future implications of their findings. A panel of the assessment authors will also summarize their research experience and discuss next steps for enhancing maternal and child health programs on the Navajo Nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The workshop is part of four workshops sponsored by the sixth annual Arizona Biomedical Research Centre Education Series. The series is an ongoing initiative to develop regional and statewide engagement in health and health equity research.
