C-CART successfully combines online, in-person orientation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On August 17, students who were recently accepted into the Culturally Centered Addictions Research Training<\/a> or C-CART,\u00a0 met with their instructors for the first time. It was a hybrid experience with several of the students and instructors attending virtually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The innovative graduate certification program, funded through the National Institute on Drug Abuse, fills a critical need for culturally relevant training in health professions, and complements NAU\u2019s doctoral programs in health care and behavioral health fields. Julie A. Baldwin<\/strong>, Regents\u2019 Professor and CHER director, and Ramona Mellott<\/strong>, dean of the NAU College of Education and professor in the Department of Educational Psychology are the Multiple Principal Investigators (MPIs) of the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NAU faculty in the program include instructors and academic mentors Shane Haberstroh<\/strong>, professor, Department of Educational Psychology<\/a>; Juliette Roddy<\/strong>, NARBHA Institute James Wurgler MD chair of Criminal Justice and Behavioral Health<\/a>; Heather Williamson<\/strong>, associate professor, Department of Occupational Therapy<\/a> and CHER;  Chesleigh Keene<\/strong>, assistant professor, Department of Educational Psychology; Amit Kumar<\/strong>, assistant professor, Department of Physical Therapy and Athletic Training<\/a>; Emery Eaves<\/strong>, associate professor, Department of Anthropology<\/a>; Oaklee Rogers<\/strong>, chair and associate professor, Department of Occupational Therapy; and Regents\u2019 Professor Robert T. Trotter<\/strong>, Department of Anthropology. CHER Senior Research Coordinator Carolyn Camplain<\/strong> also assists. The program also has a National Advisory Board with leading experts in the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The program includes students from doctoral programs in occupational therapy, physical therapy, clinical psychology, counseling\/school psychology, and interdisciplinary health from departments throughout the university, as well as practicing professionals from the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first cohort includes: Amanda Acevedo<\/strong>, clinical psychology; Jeffersson Brasil Pires Dos Santos<\/strong>, interdisciplinary health; Lillian Jones<\/strong>, clinical psychology; Neshay Mall<\/strong>, combined counseling\/school psychology; Marca McCallie<\/strong>, NAU Campus Health Services; David Mensah,<\/strong> interdisciplinary health; Brooke Tubbs<\/strong>, occupational therapy; Ariella Welsh<\/strong>, Occupational Therapy; Anna Weymann<\/strong>, physical therapy; and Melissa Wheeler<\/strong>, combined counseling\/school psychology.
