How does racism embedded in policies, practices and interpersonal interactions influence the well-being of Black Arizonans?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A workshop on June 3, at the High Country Conference Center in Flagstaff, brought together community leaders, faculty, students and community members from across the state to examine health equity issues that have historically and currently affected people who are Black in Arizona.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Topics included the effects of COVID-19 on racial and minoritized groups, with a focus on people who are Black in Arizona, and an examination of trajectories of health equity for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spearers were Ann Carver<\/strong>, researcher and doctoral student at Arizona State University School of Social Work, Southwest Interdisciplinary Research Center; Mako Fitts<\/strong>, Ph.D., director of the Social Transformation Lab and Assistant Professor of African American and Women and Gender Studies in the School of Social Transformation at Arizona State University; and Olga Idriss Davis<\/strong>, Ph.D., associate dean of Barrett, The Honors College, Downtown Phoenix Campus and professor of Communication in the Hugh Downs School Fo Human Communication at Arizona State University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Workshop hosts were Linnea Evans<\/strong>, Ph.D., assistant professor for Northern Arizona University’s Center for Community Health and Engaged Research and the Department of Health Services, and Jermaine Barkley<\/strong>, vice chair for both the African Diaspora Advisory Council and Lived Black Experience Project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Evans and Carter presented their findings from a recent focus group study, Dr. Ward presented “Ghostly Trajectories: Ecologies of Black Health in Arizona” and Dr. Davis gave a presentation and led a panel discussion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The workshop was sponsored by the Arizona Department of Health Services, Arizona Biomedical Research Centre (ABRC), and Center for Community Health and Engaged Research (CHER).\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n
