For such a time as this, I just keep doing what I do until I don&#8217;t do it anymore.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:120}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For the past 30 years,&nbsp;Harris has devoted her time to preserving and developing the Southside community and empowering other Flagstaff neighborhoods, such as Sunnyside, to do the same by modeling for all how to build a neighborhood that is strong and thriving.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:120}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the podcast, Samarron, a senior research coordinator with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/legacy.nau.edu\/sherc\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Southwest Health Equity Research Collaborative<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, discussed the history of the Southside Community. She explained that when Black workers moved to Flagstaff in the 1940s, their families came with them. They lived in homes south of the railroad tracks where there was a lack of sidewalks and streets were unpaved.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:120}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the South Side neighborhood, both Blacks and people who are from Mexico resided alongside Indigenous communities, mostly Din\u00e9 and Hopi, who lived in town and on nearby reservations, commuting to work each day. White residents lived north of the tracks, which segregated communities spatially and racially.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:120}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The SCA\u2019s visionary goal of building a vibrant and walkable community<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:120}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/legacy.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/234\/Black-Lived-Experience-2022-5-2.jpg\" alt=\"Deborah Harris speaks at Black Lived Experience.\" class=\"wp-image-11257\" width=\"674\" height=\"449\" srcset=\"https:\/\/legacy.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/234\/Black-Lived-Experience-2022-5-2.jpg 2400w, https:\/\/legacy.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/234\/Black-Lived-Experience-2022-5-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/legacy.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/234\/Black-Lived-Experience-2022-5-2-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/legacy.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/234\/Black-Lived-Experience-2022-5-2-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/legacy.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/234\/Black-Lived-Experience-2022-5-2-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/legacy.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/234\/Black-Lived-Experience-2022-5-2-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 674px) 100vw, 674px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the podcast, Harris talks about one of the Southside Community\u2019s debilitating and persistent problems\u2014 addressing the Southside flooding issue.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:120}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe sad thing is that the river was purposefully diverted into the Southside so that it could not flood the more affluent sides of town, \u2026 and so because this community was a community of color and their voices weren&#8217;t really being heard 70 or 80 years ago when that was done, it put Southside in a flood zone.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:120}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Harris said the SCA is now working with the U.S. Army Core of Engineers and the City of Flagstaff to develop a collaborative, award-winning <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flagstaff.az.gov\/4189\/Rio-De-Flag-Flood-Control-Project\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Rio de Flag Flood Control Project<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> that will divert the river underground, so it no longer floods neighborhood homes and streets. She said the original plan did not include Southside residents\u2019 input.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:120}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c[In a meeting,] We were able to say, \u2018This isn&#8217;t working for us and so stop it [the original plan that would not benefit the Southside Community].\u2019 And the city stopped,\u201d she said.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:120}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Harris said that during the break, the SCA met and got \u201cinput from the voices that needed to have input\u201d to develop a new plan.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:120}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt&#8217;s not often that a community neighborhood really can work with the city, and both come away feeling pretty good about the work that they&#8217;ve done,\u201d Harris said.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:120}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Recently, the Murdoch Center began a series of town hall and community dialogue discussions called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.southsideflagstaff.com\/black-lived-experience-town-halls\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Lived Black Experience<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, which explores topics such as social justice, the criminal justice system, institutional racism, mental health, economic impact, inclusion and representation.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:120}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">To learn more about the SCA or to volunteer, visit their <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/southsideflagstaff.com\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">website<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.
