Join the 2025 Junkyard Generators Competition!
Are you ready to put your engineering skills to the test? The W.L. Gore & Associates Multi-Discipline Design Competition is back with an exciting challenge—Junkyard Generators!
About the competition
Sponsored by W.L. Gore & Associates, a global leader in innovative technologies, this competition challenges student teams to design, build, and test a functional generator—using nothing but junk! This is your chance to showcase your creativity, problem-solving, and engineering prowess.
- Team requirements: Minimum of 2 students from different engineering disciplines
- Scope: Build a generator using repurposed materials (no salvaged generators or 3D-printed performance parts)
- Safety standards: Must meet ANSI, OSHA, or related safety guidelines
- Demonstration date: April 24, 2025, at 2 p.m.
- Reimbursement: Each selected team (only 10 spots!) will receive $100 for project expenses
- Generator output (Voltage)
- Quality of documentation
- Elevator pitch & demonstration
- Creative use of materials
- 1st place: $2,000
- 2nd place: $1,000
- 3rd place: $500
