Journalism

A Journalism degree at NAU will give you hands-on practical experience in gathering credible sources, determining the truth, writing concisely and effectively, and relaying valuable and engaging stories to the public.

You will learn to deliver information through online video, television broadcasts, and print media.

You will learn to report on current events and explore many different issues at a local, national, and international level. As a journalist, at NAU, you will be reporting on evidence-based news to build your reputation and accountability on your journey to becoming a professional journalist.

The knowledge and skills developed through a your journalism degree will also transfer to careers across disciplines and industries.

Hands-On Opportunities

An important aspect of your education is developing news judgment skills forged in the heat of actual newspaper deadlines.

To develop those skills, you’ll have the opportunity to work on The Lumberjack, the university’s award-winning weekly newspaper, and NAZ Today. You’ll also be able to get class credit for internships at other approved organizations.

Sports & Adventure Media Certificate

Our Sports & Adventure Media certificate program provides the opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience in multiple media platforms while covering professional, collegiate, high school, and outdoor adventure sports.

Hone your skills while working in a professional environment in the School of Communication’s Media Innovation Center. You can anchor and produce live sports segments for our award-winning local newscast NAZ Today, broadcast live local sporting events and host sports talk radio shows for KJACK Radio, and write sports recaps and profiles for The Lumberjack newspaper. Previous students have covered numerous high-profile events, including the Super Bowl, NCAA men’s basketball Final Four, the NBA, Major League Baseball, and NASCAR championship weekend.

Our NAU sports media students have won numerous national awards, including multiple top-10 finishes in the prestigious Jim Nantz Award honoring the nation’s top college sportscasters, a regional Emmy first-place award, and several first-place awards in the BEA Festival of Media Arts.
