Learn Public Relations & Advertising

Do you enjoy working with people, brands, and social media? The NAU Strategic Communication degree program lets you focus on the creative and influential side of business by writing, designing, and producing earned, paid, owned, and shared media campaigns. Our program is the fast track to skills that translate directly into jobs in businesses across every industry. Whether you choose an emphasis in public relations, advertising, or both, you will experience hands-on learning, develop practical skills in creative design and writing, and gain an in-depth understanding of analytics and data management, all while working with real for-profit and non-profit clients. Further enhance your learning, build friendships, and create a professional network through our clubs: Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), Ad Club, and the Northern Arizona Merchandising Association (NAMA). Strategic Communication majors enjoy a close-knit community with supportive and welcoming faculty, small class sizes, and ample opportunities to personalize your experience and gain your degree. Are you interested in even more Strategic Communication opportunities? Choose our MA in Communication with an emphasis in Strategic Communication. Get a head start on your graduate degree with our accelerated option—earning dual credit toward your undergraduate and graduate degrees with three courses: Social Media Analytics and Management, Crisis Communication and Mass Communication and Human Behavior.
ADV 309 Advanced Advertising Development Strategic Communication students learn to use Adobe Creative Suite to design ads with Professor Amy Dryden.
ADV 309 will help you understand how excellent ads are created and give you experience developing ads for a variety of platforms. You'll learn how the four key areas of advertising agencies (research, media selection, account management, and creative) work together to create successful ad campaigns on a variety of platforms. You will enhance skills gained in STR 307 in InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and emerging technologies. You will refine and expand abilities to identify and address a clearly defined target audience. You will also learn basic skills in media selection.

ADV Capstone Client Testimonial

“As a local Flagstaff, family-owned company, we are thrilled to partner with the Strategic Communication department at Northern Arizona University via the Advertising Capstone classes. We are honored to be able to recommend one of our amazing beverage products for the class to spend an entire semester researching and creating outstanding comprehensive advertising campaigns.  The work that these student groups have completed has been incredibly creative, thorough and impactful. We have shared the students' campaigns with our sales and marketing teams to inspire them in building product awareness in our market and, ultimately, growing sales.” - Greg Cox, Director of Capabilities, Nackard Pepsi

PR Capstone Client Testimonial

“What a PHENOMENAL experience it was for all of us at the Sedona International Film Festival to be a project for the NAU PR Senior Capstone classes! We were blown away by the hard work, dedication and creativity that the students put into their projects. They took our challenges and turned them into opportunities! They gave us an outside perspective on our current PR campaigns, website and outreach and used their expertise that they have learned at NAU to shape a new, innovative and forward-thinking plan for us as we venture into the future. I and my entire board and staff came away from this experience with a renewed energy for implementing some truly creative solutions that were presented to us by these incredibly gifted students.” - Patrick Schweiss, Executive Director, Sedona International Film Festival
