Career opportunities

Set yourself up for a successful job search by being prepared.

  • Set aside time to search and apply for federal jobs – this is not a quick process
  • Familiarize yourself with usajobs.gov – this is where you apply for federal jobs
    • create a profile in usajobs.gov
    • create a “saved searches” in your account and have emails sent to you when jobs you specify open up (this is explained in usajobs.gov)
  • Read the whole job description and make sure you are qualified to apply for the position
  • Make sure your resume is current and tailored to the specific job qualifications
    • If you do not have previous fieldwork experience in Forestry or a related field, be sure to list transferable skills that you have from other jobs that are relevant to the position you are applying for (such as database, spreadsheet, inventory and customer service skills)
    • List your forestry or relevant coursework. Be detailed and specific – list the course name i.e. Forest Measurements, or Applied Statistics not the class subject FOR 211, or STA 270
