Community Health, Minor

As the demand for health knowledge increasingly permeates society, this minor prepares students to plan and evaluate health programs or design and teach community health in K-12 school settings. The plan builds awareness of the many connections between life habits and lifestyle and the health of our society.

Requirements Accordion Open

  • A minor is earned in conjunction with a bachelor's degree.

    To receive a minor (18 - 24 units) at Northern Arizona University, you must complete a planned group of courses from one or more subject matter areas with a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0. At least 12 units of the minor must be unique to that minor and not applied to any other minor.

Purpose Statement

The Community Health minor prepares students for careers complementary to public health. Students learn the foundations of public health, including social determinants of health, levels of prevention, and current and emerging health topics. Students apply knowledge and skills to design and evaluate health promotion programs.
 

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Describe the history and philosophy of public health and apply its core values, concepts, and functions to promote public health.
  • Apply and evaluate evidence-based approaches and interventions to identify and address populations' major health-related needs and concerns.
  • Evaluate the influence of socio-economic, behavioral, biological, political, environmental, and other factors that influence human health and contribute to health.
  • Utilize the basic concepts of public health-specific communication, including technical and professional writing, and mass media and electronic technology for effective public health promotion and agency functioning.
  • Understand, utilize, and communicate the concepts and applications of basic statistics in various settings and for diverse needs, including health promotion, health communication, and program evaluation.
  • Design and evaluate community-based projects or health promotion interventions by applying the fundamental concepts of program planning and appropriate methods to evaluate public health programs.
