NAU Exchange Student Enrollment

Students on exchange at NAU have a wide variety of course options for enrollment.  In addition to courses in your major, you can enroll in courses from other departments that are of interest to you.

Exchange students must enroll in a minimum of 12 in-person credits (four courses) per semester. You may choose to enroll in online classes in addition to your 12 credits of in-person classes. Classes listed as “Blended learning” are considered in-person classes.

You should begin the class registration process as soon as possible after receiving admission to NAU since class seats are limited.

Review the Exchange Student Enrollment Guide and follow the process provided. Email the Exchange Student team at exchangestudent@nau.edu with any questions.

Exchange Student Enrollment Guide

Step 1: Search for Classes Accordion Closed

  • Course numbering system:
    • 100 – 199: Introductory and beginning courses
    • 200 – 299: Intermediate level courses
    • 300 – 399: Advanced-intermediate level courses
    • 400 – 499: Advanced level courses
    • 500 – 799: Graduate level courses (typically not available for exchange)
  • Review the NAU academic catalog for degree program information including course descriptions, prerequisites, and credit hours.
  • You can also search for courses in LOUIE via “Manage Classes.”

Step 2: Identify Your Course Preferences Accordion Closed

Prerequisites:

  • A prerequisite is a course you must take before you can take another course. You can still request courses with prerequisites, and NAU Academic Advisors will evaluate your transcript and prior coursework to determine your eligibility for the course.  If approved, you can be enrolled in the course.

Waitlist:

  • You should enroll in 12 credits as soon as possible.
  • If a course is full, you can be added to the waitlist.  If seats become available, you will be automatically enrolled into the course.
  • You can make adjustments to your schedule if you are enrolled into a waitlisted course.
  • Being added to a waitlist does not guarantee enrollment.

Reserved Seats:

  • Some courses have reserved seats. The “Reserved Seats” section in Class Details will show who the seats are reserved for and how many seats are reserved. If no additional seats are open, you may not be able to enroll in this course.

Course Requests:

  • Create a list of 10-12 courses you would like to enroll in for the upcoming term.
  • Academic year exchange students will enroll for their first semester initially.  You will enroll for your second semester after you arrive to NAU.
  • Course descriptions are available in LOUIE.
  • Please check the time and days the courses are offered to avoid conflicting schedules.
  • Organize your list in order of preference.

Step 3: Submit Your Course Preferences to iNAU Accordion Closed

  • Submit the “Exchange Student Enrollment Request” form via iNAU.
  • You will be asked to submit the following information about each class you are requesting:
    • Courses listed in order of preference (#1 most desired course):
    • Subject Prefix, Course Number, Class Number (BIO, 205, 3538)
  • If necessary, course selection changes can be made with the “Course Change and Additional Course Request” form.
  • Both forms can be found in the “Exchange Student Requests” menu on iNAU.
  • Contact SunapsisHelp@nau.edu if you encounter iNAU login or other technical issues.

Step 4: NAU Enrollment Processed Accordion Closed

  • The NAU Exchange Student Coordinator will review your course preferences and move forward with enrolling you in your top choices.
  • However, enrollment cannot be guaranteed because some classes fill up quickly and some courses may not be approved.
  • You will typically be enrolled in 4-6 courses, but we ask for 10-12 options so that you have flexibility in case some classes are not available.
  • We will contact you by email if we need additional course options to complete your enrollment.
  • The enrollment process can take several weeks to complete, since we are working with department advisors to get approval.
  • We will be in touch by email with updates as we work on your enrollment.
