About the Lumberjack Mathematics Center (LMC)
As a leader in technology and education, Northern Arizona University has redesigned four mathematics courses (MAT 100, MAT 108, MAT 114, and MAT 125) and introduced the Lumberjack Mathematics Center (LMC) to help students succeed in mathematics. The LMC is located on the second floor of the Student and Academic Services Building. In addition to classrooms and our computer lab, the LMC has quiet study rooms and comfortable seating areas for students to enjoy.

We believe students learn mathematics by doing mathematics, not by listening to someone talk about or present the subject. Our course structures require students to spend lots of time working on mathematics themselves, which we believe increases their likelihood of success in their math course. The LMC follows a modified emporium model, where students meet in the classroom with an instructor and are also required to spend time in the LMC Lab working on course content.

The LMC Lab has over 300 computers and is located in the Student and Academic Services building. Students can use the LMC Lab’s valuable resources, including tutors (Math Jacks) and instructors who are always available, free 45 minute one-on-one tutoring appointments with our highly qualified Math Jacks, and a testing room where students can take proctored exams early if needed.

The mathematics course students will take depends on their math placement. Please visit the Math Placement page for more information.
LMC math course details
The LMC houses four of NAU’s introductory math courses: MAT 100, MAT 108, MAT 114, and MAT 125.
MAT 100 Accordion Closed
MAT 100: Mathematics Pathways is a two credit hour pass-fail course. In MAT 100 students have one required weekly meeting. Students are also required to work on course material for 60 minutes each week outside of class time in the LMC Lab. All course assignments are completed using ALEKS software.
Course content: Review of algebra topics including the simplification of algebraic expressions, solution of algebraic equations, graphing of linear equations and factoring of polynomials.
Sections offered: every fall, winter, spring and summer*
Course coordinator: Shanna Manny
*Winter and summer courses must meet minimum enrollment requirements and are only offered online.
MAT 108 Accordion Closed
MAT 108: Algebra for Precalculus is a three credit hour course designed to provide a review of fundamental concepts and skills required for successful entry into MAT 121: Finite Mathematics with Calculus or MAT 125: Precalculus. In MAT 108 students have two required weekly class meetings. One class meeting takes place in the classroom in which they explore some of the core concepts in groups through lessons and hands-on activities. The other class meeting takes place in the LMC Lab where they work on class assignments. Students are also required to work on course material for 60 minutes each week outside of class time in the LMC Lab. All course assignments are completed using ALEKS software.
Course content: Algebraic operations; simplifying expressions; functions; graphs; linear, absolute value, quadratic, cubic, square root functions; solving equations and inequalities; systems of equations.
Sections offered: every fall, winter, spring and summer*
Course coordinator: Sarah Watson
*Winter and summer courses must meet minimum enrollment requirements and are only offered online.
MAT 114 Accordion Closed
MAT 114 is a three credit hour course designed for students in non-STEM majors. In MAT 114 students have two required weekly meetings. Students are also required to work on course material for 30 minutes each week outside of class time in the LMC Lab. All course assignments are completed using MyLabs Math software.
Course content: Contemporary quantitative methods, especially descriptive statistics, elementary probability, examples of statistical inference, linear and exponential models of growth and decay, and applicable discrete models.
Sections offered: every fall, spring and summer*
Course coordinator: David Deville
*Summer courses must meet minimum enrollment requirements and are only offered online.
MAT 125 Accordion Closed
MAT 125 is a four credit hour course in preparation for MAT 136: Calculus I. In MAT 125 students have three required weekly meetings. Two of these meetings take place in the classroom in which they explore some of the core concepts in groups through lessons and hands-on activities. The third class meeting takes place in the LMC Lab where they work on class assignments. Students are also required to work on course material for 50 minutes each week outside of class time in the LMC Lab. All course assignments are completed using MyLabs Math software.
Course content: Concept of function; graphs; absolute value, linear, polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions, systems of equations, analytic geometry.
Sections offered: every fall, spring and summer*
Course coordinator: Hannah Prawzinsky
*Summer courses must meet minimum enrollment requirements and are only offered online.

What are my Lab minutes and why do I have to do them? Accordion Closed
Each LMC course is unique and has its own lab attendance requirements. See your LMC course syllabus for Lab attendance requirements. Lab minutes count for part of your course’s credit hours, so to meet the required credit hours of the course you are expected to complete additional time in the Lab outside of your class. This time in the Lab allows you to ask questions and get help while you’re working, leading to greater understanding and success.
What calculator can I use? Accordion Closed
The only calculator that is approved for all LMC courses is the TI-30XIIS. If you do not have a calculator, you can check one out for free at the LMC front desk with a physical ID or debit/credit card. Calculators on the Lab computers are also approved for use in LMC courses.
