What is High School Math Day? Accordion Closed

NAU High School Math Day is an event hosted by the Department of Mathematics & Statistics each fall. The day is a mixture of friendly competition and mini-seminars presented by our faculty.  We hope to provide an enjoyable day for students and teachers with the following goals in mind:

  1. show that mathematics is fun and interesting
  2. show students and teachers that mathematics is useful beyond the high school classroom
  3. encourage students and teachers to pursue further studies in mathematics – perhaps at NAU!

Who should attend? Accordion Closed

The math day is for Arizona high school students. We can accept only the first 160 students who register. Interested students at any level are welcome.  Students do not need to be taking Calculus, but knowledge of Algebra I is assumed.

How many students can each school bring? Accordion Closed

Since registration is limited to 160 students, each school should plan to bring no more than 12 students.  It is also our hope that there would be one adult for every 10 students.

Will lunch be provided? Accordion Closed

We have modified our schedule so that all of our events are finished before lunch.  We will not provide a mid-morning snack.  After High School Math Day, your group will likely need to eat lunch before heading home.  You may choose to bring sack lunches, eat at a nearby restaurant, or visit the food court in the Student Union near Cline Library.

What should we bring? Accordion Closed

Bring pencils and paper, but leave calculators at home. Clipboards may be useful.

How do I register? Accordion Closed

There is no registration fee.  Contact Ian Williams or reply to his email to register.  Please fill out the form: NAU HSMD Registration Form by Monday, October 27th, 2025. You will be asked to provide the name of your school, the names of all teachers and students attending, t-shirt sizes, and if you need a parking permit for the day of the event.
