Dr. Patrick Carroll from Ohio State to speak Dec. 7

Posted by antonia on November 26, 2018

Patrick J. Carroll, Ph.D., associate professor of psychology at The Ohio State University-Lima, will be presenting a talk titled “Preparedness and Self-Validation” next week in the Psychological Sciences department.  As stated in his abstract,
Feeling ready to act can automatically activate the primitive, inborn physiologic response that prepares the organism for action (e.g., fight vs. fight response, Cannon, 1929).  Given that association, we argue that merely thinking about being prepared can lead people to a readiness to respond. This response readiness is necessary for organism to deal with all kinds of challenges.  The present research tests the claim that preparedness feelings increase confidence and, in turn, thought-reliance on attitudes irrelevant to the domain of preparation.

Dr. Carroll’s research  focuses on the social revision of possible and core selves and the ultimate consequences of those identity revisions for mental health. Carroll earned the 2009 and 2016 Outstanding University Scholar awards for this work.  He is a member of the elected Society of Experimental Social Psychology and has served as an editorial consultant for several journals and served as co-associate editor for a special issue of Basic and Applied Social Psychology.  His work has been featured on national and international outlets and programs, including the “Mindshift” site of national public radio.

Please join us for this special “brown bag” event Dec. 7 at 11:30 am in the Psychological Sciences large conference room (room 302), SAS building 3rd floor.
