Fieldwork in Human Resources (PSY 409)

The Human Resources Management internship course (PSY 409) is an applied experience and requires an application process.  Internships are expected to be 10 hours per week, although the exact time can be altered if agreed to by the organization, the intern, and the instructor of the PSY 409 course.

Prerequisites

The prerequisites for PSY 409 are to be enrolled in the Human Resources Management Certificate program and to have completed six credits from the courses in the program (MGT 300 or 303, MGT 310, PSY 347, and PSY 348) prior to the start of the semester you take PSY 409.  Thus, if you plan on taking these 6 credits over the summer term you would be eligible to apply for the fall semester.

Application Review

Once your resume is reviewed and approved, it will be forwarded to the human resources departments of the organizations with which we have agreements for internship opportunities. They will review your resume and decide whether or not to offer you an interview.

Although we will do our best to facilitate internships, placement is not guaranteed and you are primarily responsible for communicating with organizations after they contact you.  You may also arrange an internship with an organization yourself, but can receive PSY 409 credit only if approved by the course instructor prior to the start of the semester.  If an internship is unable to be arranged we can provide an alternative fieldwork experience.

To register for the class, send a resume to and please contact the PSY 409 instructor (Dr. Busath) and a permission-to-add code will be sent to you by email.

My internship has helped me gain valuable skills needed in the HR profession. The connections I made with the HR professionals have not only impacted me professionally but, personally. They want to see you succeed and it is a great opportunity to gain real-life experience in the workforce. It was an amazing experience to see how my internship helped open up many opportunities for me.

-Yaijara Martinez Ochoa

The HR Internship course has really helped me find myself professionally. I realized what part of Human Resources I want to go into. The internship has taught me so much and given me the opportunity to be mentored by someone who has been in the field for a long time. It was an experience that gave me the chance to learn something new and bring a new perspective to my organization. In addition to working and learning new things, I found support and built new connections with my supervisor and others in Human Resources.

-Kaydee Brain

Interning in a Human Resources Department was such a wonderful experience. I learned what the day-to-day tasks of an HR employee might look like and it helped solidify my decision to go into HR. Being able to list the experience on my resume helped me to get a job and having a reference from HR helped immensely as well! I strongly recommend enrolling in PSY 409 if you’re considering a career in HR, and even if you’re not; knowledge of HR practices is good to have in nearly every professional setting!

-Emily Jerdonek

PSY 409 is a great experience for anyone pursuing Human Resources as a career. I have learned everything from hiring and terminating to onboarding and developing. The internship provides such insight and clarity that regular classes cannot give you. You are immersed in opportunity and chances to network. I have met so many wonderful people through this internship that are willing to teach what they know about HR. It gives you the experience and expertise you need to find a job after college. This internship has changed the way I think about HR.

-Laila Mapa

Psy 409 has provided me with the experience necessary to determine whether or not Human Resources is the correct career path for me. Dr. Busath is very passionate about the topic and cares deeply about helping find you an internship that works for your schedule and coincides with your interests. I recommend this class to anybody who is curious about the real-world application of Personnel and Organizational psychology and who is contemplating a career in HR.

-Danielle Bartlett

I think that the Human Resource certification is something that has really made it clear that HR is something I want to get into. I have been able to learn the business side as well as the psychology side. I think that this has given me the ability to learn so much before getting into the work force. I have been able to connect with other HR professionals and build my network. I have learned a lot about all the different way that I can get into HR.

-Devon Olivarez

I had such a wonderful experience with the internship through the HR certificate program! I was able to do my internship at The Guidance Center, a community mental health facility. This HR department was a smaller one and because of this I was able to help them in many of their projects. After being there for some time I was given my own projects and had a lot of independence to complete different tasks. I think this internship opportunity really showed me what I would face in the future and would allow me a hands on experience. I learned a lot about how HR departments can be run and what kind of work certain HR departments do. I also learned about myself and this internship has helped me to be confident in this career path.

-Makana Tyrell

My Human Resources internship was by far one of the most beneficial courses I took here at NAU. I learned about an ever growing field of HR and the many opportunities that a career in HR will offer.  Not only does this internship look good on a college graduate resume but also you also get a sneak peak of the real world before you graduate.  Because of this internship, I learned where my interests lie in the business world and the future career I would want to do for the rest of my life.  I Love HR!
