Special seminar coming up Oct 10: “Wings of Change” with Lauren Pharr – climate change, woodpeckers and science communication

Please join us for a special seminar by Lauren Pharr, avian ecologist and award winning science communicator. Lauren will be giving her talk, “Wings of Change”, on Monday October 10th at 4PM in Geology Room 103. Her talk will focus on her experience researching the effects of climate change on birds and as a science communicator

Talk Title: Wings of Change

Monday October 10th at 4pm in Geology Room 103

Bio: Lauren D. Pharr is an avian ecologist and Ph.D. student at North Carolina State University pursuing her degree in Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology. Her current research focuses on studying the effects of climate change on nestling success in the federally endangered Red-cockaded Woodpecker. She earned her B.S. degree in Environmental Biology from Wingate University in 2019 and her M.S. degree in Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology from NCSU in 2021. Aside from her research, Lauren is also an engaged and award-winning science communicator. She has given over 30 talks for multiple organizations and societies, and has written and contributed pieces to a variety of outlets including National Geographic, BBC Wildlife and eBird. She currently serves as a science communication intern for North Carolina Sea Grant as well as a member on the Editorial Advisory Board for the Wildlife Society. In her talk, Lauren will be sharing her experience as a researcher and science communicator, and discussing her work studying the impacts of a warming climate on birds of North Carolina.
