Using Portable X-ray Fluorescence for Elemental Profiling

February 23, 2026 10 am – 2 pm, Walnut Room in the Union

Dr. Aaron Specht, Assistant Professor in the School of Health Sciences at Purdue University, will present a workshop on the applications of X-ray fluorescence (XRF) in environmental health, focusing on assessing exposure to toxic elements such as lead. The session will cover XRF measurements of tissue (both non-invasive and collected samples), alongside typical analyses for environmental monitoring. Participants will learn about XRF’s principles, measurement protocols, and recent advances for in-field assessments. Case studies will illustrate how XRF measures can help inform public health decisions and risk assessments by providing accurate data on long-term and acute exposures in both individuals and populations, ultimately guiding effective intervention and prevention strategies.
