Firstly, my parents are immigrants, so growing up I was able to see, to a certain extent, the many difficulties faced by an immigrant family. I want to do something to change that, to resolve those difficulties, so the world can be a little better. So for me it is being able to do that, but at the same time, through this work, be able to capture that we cannot do it alone, that we need to be able to have alliances, we require having connections, conocimientos* (collective knowledge). I became involved and I have really liked it. Why? We help each other. For this reason, I have liked the group. It is really important. Helping one another and knowing the necessities we have, which are a lot. Necessities in the community of Flagstaff and the immigrant community.

LEAH: I am not a member of these communities, but with projects like this, we have the opportunity to truly understand the experiences of our neighbors. I have the opportunity to have a relationship with them, rather than just an investigation where we come, ask questions, and leave. This is part of a larger long-term relationship. For me, the relationship is always changing- the organization, my relationship as an investigator and also a leader in the community. This year we have had the opportunity to talk with more people and in new ways, as well.

Elevating Community Voices

Collaboration and community connections are essential for promoting health equity. We’re going to have another meeting in a few weeks where we want to put together a plan to have conversations with our neighbors so that we have an understanding of what their needs are. That is something that we want to get going. Within that process, we want to identify some exact things that we can work on together, in that space, to encourage more relationships and to be able to give more opportunities for more people to be part of that work. It is not just asking them for information. It’s also about inviting them to be part of this and to build capacity so that they are a part of all this.

NAIC LEADER: I’ve liked the experiences like when we went to speak with the superintendent and the meeting we had. I liked that they listened to me.

That is why we are a group; to have the opportunity to listen to each other and help each other. We were listening to the superintendent , we were having conversations and we listened to each other. We, as immigrants, need more to live a life with dignity. Everything that they ask of us. All of those responsibilities. But in this group, well we talk, we listen to each other. As a group we can talk and know that we are not alone. Together we will move forward.

Approaches to Community Health

Here the team discusses how their experiences in community organizing and anthropology play a role in their approach to health research.

LEAH: Well, as an anthropologist, anthropology and community organizing methods complement each other. I think that as a researcher I have learned a lot from organizing methods. For example, I believe that an interview shouldn’t be objective, without the participation of the researcher as a person. It should incorporate the researcher’s experience as a person and member of the community. In organizing it is called a relational meeting. For me, that is how an interview has much more success. So I think that these methods have a lot of complementary features.

ROXANA: Well in community organizing it is continually highlighted that when we talk about health equity that health is so many things. For example, health is just not something physical, as we typically think. It is mental health, spiritual health, health of the soul. It is not just as individuals, but as community, as a society, as part of an institution. In fact, what we are looking for is a state of well-being. So well-being for me is the equivalent to health equity. We can’t have one without the other.

Lessons Learned

The team discusses what they have learned or what they have found surprising during the development of this partnership.

NAIC LEADER: I learned to listen, and to be listened to. This includes being able to offer food, something that seems so simple. In reality, it means a lot- being able to offer pizza or anything. Beyond using it to fuel ourselves, it helps us meet and have time to connect and listen, talk about our strategies, and evaluate what we are doing. Things that in the past, especially during the pandemic, did not have the opportunity to prioritize. We weren’t able to give ourselves the opportunity to include it in our spaces, but with this project, it has been possible, and you can tell the difference. Without a doubt, you can tell the difference. And remember that it is not just about fueling yourself with food, which is important, but also it is a way to connect.
