This year, the Social Work Month Committee organized a dynamic series of events inspired by the NASW’s national theme, Compassion + Action. With a focus on creativity, collaboration, and community engagement, the month-long celebration in March invited participation from across disciplines.
Students were encouraged to express their vision of compassion and social justice through art. Their work transformed our building’s hallway into a powerful visual reflection of current social justice issues and the resilience of those working toward equity. The interactive art space became a meaningful hub for reflection and dialogue.
In both in-person and digital spaces, we launched the Compassion + Action Challenge, encouraging students, faculty, and community members to engage in acts of service or kindness. Participants shared their efforts on social media, using hashtags to highlight and honor local community partners committed to justice and well-being.
Faculty and staff were also invited to take part in a guided Compassion Meditation session, led in partnership with NAU’s Employee Wellness and Assistance Program. To show appreciation for their invaluable contributions to the field of social work, we also provided treats and time for connection and self-care.
Together, these events reminded us that compassion, when paired with meaningful action, continues to be at the heart of social work—and a catalyst for lasting change.
