Sheila Hammer, LCSW, MSW, is currently working on two separate grants. She and her Co-PI, Dr. Timian Godfrey from the University of Arizona, have a 3-year $120k p/year grant funded from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) via the Partnership for Native American Cancer Prevention where they are creating a culturally tailored approach to provide support and health education to Pascua Yaqui tribal members who have both a diabetes and cancer diagnosis.
Her second grant is $5k and is an internal grant funded by NAU’s Southwest Health Equity Research Center (SHERC) to support a Community-Campus Partnership. Sheila has been collaborating closely with TJ Riggs, Oncology Program Director at Tuba City’s Specialty Care Clinic on the Navajo Nation, to identify ways to culturally adapt oncology distress screening tools to better meet the psychosocial needs of Navajo individuals with cancer.
