{"id":1633,"date":"2020-11-24T23:56:01","date_gmt":"2020-11-24T23:56:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nau.edu\/aspirations\/?p=1633"},"modified":"2021-12-20T15:54:46","modified_gmt":"2021-12-20T15:54:46","slug":"sherwin-bitsui-poetry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/legacy.nau.edu\/stories\/sherwin-bitsui-poetry\/","title":{"rendered":"Poems by Sherwin Bitsui"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"is-style-leadIn\">Renowned poet and Assistant Professor of Creative Writing at Northern Arizona University Sherwin Bitsui shares two poems for you to read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fall 2019, acclaimed poet <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.nau.edu\/?person=sjb345\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/directory.nau.edu\/?person=sjb345\">Sherwin Bitsui<\/a> joined Northern Arizona University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/legacy.nau.edu\/english\/programs\/masters-degrees\/mfa-creative-writing\/\">MFA Creative Writing<\/a> program as Assistant Professor of Creative Writing. Originally from White Cone, Arizona, on the Navajo Nation, Bitsui is the author of three collections of poetry, <em>Dissolve<\/em> (Copper Canyon, 2018), <em>Flood Song<\/em> (Copper Canyon), and <em>Shapeshift<\/em> (University of Arizona Press). He is Din\u00e9 of the Tod\u00ed\u00adch\u2019ii\u2019nii (Bitter Water Clan), born for the Tliz\u00ed\u00adlaan\u00ed (Many Goats Clan) and holds an AFA from the Institute of American Indian Arts Creative Writing Program and a BA from University of Arizona in Tucson. His recent honors include a 2011 Lannan Foundation Literary Fellowship and a 2011 Native Arts and Culture Foundation Arts Fellowship. He is also the recipient of the 2010 PEN Open Book Award, an American Book Award, and a Whiting Writers Award. Bitsui has published his poems in <em>Narrative<\/em>, <em>Black Renaissance Noir<\/em>, <em>American Poet<\/em>, <em>The Iowa Review<\/em>, <em>LIT<\/em>, and elsewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bitsui served as a final judge for the 2021 James Welch Prize, a judge for the 2021 Colorado Prize for Poetry, and was a member of the judging panel for the 2021 PEN\/Voelker Award for Poetry Collection. He was the 2021 guest poetry editor for the Vermont College of Fine Arts journal\u00a0<em>Hunger Mountain<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>[<strong>They inherit a packet of earth<\/strong>]<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>BY SHERWIN BITSUI<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They inherit a packet of earth<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>hear its coins clank in a tin box<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>push <em>them <\/em>aside<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>reap thick strands of night from thinning black hair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They climb the staircase clenching branches of pens filled with ducks\u2019 blood<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and follow the butcher\u2019s bed into this room\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>goose feathers thorning out of their eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They promise to never look down again<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>down is just a speck of globe dust<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>just coins clanking in the tin box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sherwin Bitsui, \u201c[They inherit a packet of earth]\u201d from <em>Flood Song<\/em>. Reprinted by permission of Copper Canyon Press.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>River<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>BY SHERWIN BITSUI<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When we river,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>blood fills cracks in bullet shells,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>oars become fingers scratching windows into dawn,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and faces are stirred from mounds of mica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I notice the back isn\u2019t as smooth anymore,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the river crests at the moment of blinking;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>its blood vessels stiffen and spear the drenched coat of flies<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>collecting outside the jaw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Night slows here,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the first breath held back,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>clenched like a tight fist in the arroyo under shattered glass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But we still want to shake the oxygen loose from flypaper,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>hack its veins,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>divert its course,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and reveal its broken back,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>the illusion of a broken back.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sherwin Bitsui, \u201cRiver\u201d from <em>Shapeshift<\/em>.
