{"id":5337,"date":"2023-02-15T01:36:06","date_gmt":"2023-02-15T01:36:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nau.edu\/boundless\/?p=5337"},"modified":"2023-04-24T14:34:24","modified_gmt":"2023-04-24T14:34:24","slug":"hispanic-insulin-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/legacy.nau.edu\/stories\/hispanic-insulin-research\/","title":{"rendered":"Family loyalty sparks insulin resistance research"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"is-style-leadIn\">Andres Huerta is all about family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This first-generation student makes the six-hour drive home for holidays and calls his mother daily. His mom, originally from a low-income family in Durango, Mexico, dropped out of school to help her parents. As Huerta was growing up, she and other family members stressed the importance of education as a route to success and financial stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That, Huerta says, is what motivates him to succeed at NAU. Huerta is set to graduate with a bachelor\u2019s degree in <a href=\"https:\/\/legacy.nau.edu\/biological-sciences\/bs-biomedical-sciences\/\">Biomedical Science<\/a> in May 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His goal is to work in the medical field, and while keeping his options open, his top interest is becoming a physician\u2019s assistant. \u201cMy motivation stemmed from witnessing several family members suffer from diabetes, cancer, or Alzheimer\u2019s,\u201d Huerta says. \u201cWitnessing this sparked a light in me about pursuing a career where I can work on preventative measures as well as treatment plans so patients can focus on healing.\u201d Right now, he is making the most of the opportunities he has discovered at NAU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"hands-on-research-experience\">Hands-on research experience<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This spring, Huerta is participating in the <a href=\"https:\/\/legacy.nau.edu\/undergraduate-research\/undergraduate-symposium\/\">Undergraduate Symposium<\/a>. Funded by the <a href=\"https:\/\/legacy.nau.edu\/undergraduate-research\/interns-to-scholars\/\">Interns-to-Scholars program<\/a>, he will be presenting work from his time in the <a href=\"https:\/\/legacy.nau.edu\/biological-sciences\/cardiovascular-regulation-laboratory\/\">Cardiovascular Regulation Laboratory<\/a> working under Department of Biology Associate Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.nau.edu\/?person=ssj24\">Sara Jarvis<\/a>. Huerta\u2019s project is titled \u201cInfluence of Body Composition on Insulin Sensitivity in the Hispanic Population.\u201d He also presented this research at the 2022 Arizona Physiological Society Annual Meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Insulin is a hormone created in the pancreas that regulates blood sugar levels. Insulin sensitivity describes how well the body reacts to insulin levels. A low insulin sensitivity, also called insulin resistance, is associated with several health conditions\u2014including type 2 diabetes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of his research, Huerta collected different body measurements from volunteers, including hip-to-thigh ratio and waist and thigh circumference. He then collected blood samples before and after the volunteers drank glucose (sugar) to quantify glucose tolerance. \u201cYou begin to notice the trend that individuals with larger waist circumferences are more susceptible to becoming insulin resistant or insulin sensitive, which just means that they aren\u2019t processing their sugar as well as they should be,\u201d Huerta says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/legacy.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/179\/2023\/02\/6191_symposium_andres_20230201-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Undergraduate researcher Andres Huerta in the lab.\" class=\"wp-image-5347\" srcset=\"https:\/\/legacy.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/179\/2023\/02\/6191_symposium_andres_20230201-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/legacy.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/179\/2023\/02\/6191_symposium_andres_20230201-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/legacy.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/179\/2023\/02\/6191_symposium_andres_20230201-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/legacy.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/179\/2023\/02\/6191_symposium_andres_20230201-1536x1025.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/legacy.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/179\/2023\/02\/6191_symposium_andres_20230201-800x534.jpg 800w, https:\/\/legacy.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/179\/2023\/02\/6191_symposium_andres_20230201.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The study hit close to home. \u201cI do identify as Hispanic. Hispanics and a lot of other minority groups are more susceptible to type 2 diabetes. Dr. Jarvis\u2019 project is geared towards Hispanics and understanding genetic makeup and how that could affect their predisposition to type 2 diabetes,\u201d Huerta says. \u201cI&#8217;ve seen how in my family, a lot of them have type 2 diabetes and are struggling with medications or insulin pumps, which affects their day-to-day life. I am excited to help find different intervention strategies that could keep someone from developing diabetes in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mentorship was an essential part of Huerta\u2019s success in the lab. Dr. Jarvis made sure he was familiar with lab equipment and gave him tips on working with human research subjects. She also helped him feel appreciated. \u201cThat\u2019s super cool and exciting for me to have that kind of relationship, especially with the professor,\u201d he says. Huerta also learned from his mentor, graduate student Leah Claus. \u201cShe showed me the ropes in the lab and guided me on to how to succeed,\u201d Huerta says. \u201cShe taught me a lot of lab skills as well as letting me know about different aspects of the research.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Huerta funded his initial research through a <a href=\"https:\/\/legacy.nau.edu\/ses\/louis-stokes-award-for-minority-participation-lsamp\/\">Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP)<\/a> grant and presented his research at LSAMP mini-symposiums. He credits LSAMP for helping him gain his footing as he navigated university life. \u201cLSAMP set me up with a mentor and tutoring. That has really helped me get through college.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"exploring-the-medical-field\">Exploring the medical field <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Always looking for opportunities to increase his medical knowledge, Huerta is currently working on an NAU internship with the Coconino County Medical Examiner\u2019s Office. He will gain a general overview of what happens in their office, completing office work and observing autopsies. He is also working on a pharmacy technician program through his job at Walmart, learning about health insurance, different medications, and how to work with pharmacists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Huerta also joined the <a href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/gateway-student-success-center\/clubs\/#md\">Medical Directive<\/a> club, a decision that gave him the opportunity to connect with a physician assistant mentor. \u201cI got in touch with someone currently in NAU\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/legacy.nau.edu\/physician-assistant\/program\/\">Physician Assistant<\/a> program at the Phoenix Bioscience Core,\u201d Huerta says. \u201cShe helped me understand what it was like applying and what to expect for the first-year studies and the second-year clinical. It made me fall in love with NAU\u2019s ability to have those kinds of resources available to us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before starting PA school, Huerta will take a gap year to finish the pharmacy technician program and spend time at home with family.
