Theatre, Minor

This minor provides students with opportunities to become involved in script analysis, stagecraft, acting, costuming, and production workshops. This highly experiential minor broadens understanding of the many disciplines required to create stage 'magic.'

  • A minor is earned in conjunction with a bachelor's degree.

    To receive a minor (18 - 24 units) at Northern Arizona University, you must complete a planned group of courses from one or more subject matter areas with a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0. At least 12 units of the minor must be unique to that minor and not applied to any other minor.

Purpose Statement

A minor in Theatre Arts provides the undergraduate theatre student with the broadest possible understanding of the art and craft of theatre through the creative, critical, and applied practice of theatre, and provides opportunity through performance and production for the student to learn their art by doing their art in a learner-centered environment. The program seeks to prepare students for a global society by creating an awareness of the diversity of lived experience, practicing empathetic thinking, and sustainability with a global perspective. Majors that pair well with a Theatre Minor are Business, Creative Media and Film, Studio Art, Secondary Education, Cultural Arts and Management, Music, Psychology, English, Anthropology, Visual Communications, and many more due to the diverse and skill-based education that Theatre Arts offers the student.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Evaluate, analyze, and apply the depth and breadth of knowledge about the global impact of Theatre history, literature, and practices to the scholarship and practice of the art and craft of Theatre.
  • Value and apply understanding of and experience with Theatre as a collaborative art to the scholarship and practice of the art and craft of Theatre.
  • Apply knowledge of theory through the practical application of Theatre.
  • Articulate an understanding of sustainability in Theatre, in all its manifestations.
  • Effectively communicate the theory and practice of Theatre in the following modes: digital, literary, verbal, and non-verbal.
  • Apply effective problem-solving through creative and critical thinking.
  • Demonstrate the facility to synthesize and apply their liberal studies to the practice of Theatre.
  • Practice an effective system of preparation and working habits.
