“Understanding the Community Impact of Valley Fever among Native American populations in Northern Arizona”

NAU Academic Partner: Bridget Barker, PhD; Assistant Professor, Pathogen and Microbiome Institute

Community Partner: Mae-Gilene Begay, MSW; Department Director, Navajo Community Health Representatives (CHR) Program

Goal of Partnership: Understand the community impact and potential public health interventions/outreach that would be effective in promoting awareness of Valley Fever impacts on Navajo Nation.


“Exploring School Nutrition in Navajo Nation Schools”

NAU Academic Partner: Regina S. Eddie, PhD, RN; Assistant Clinical Professor, College of Nursing

Community Partner: Angela Barney Nez; Executive Director, Diné Bi Olta School Board Association (DBOSBA)

Goal of Partnership: Collaborate with DBOSBA to understand their views and concerns on school nutrition and create mutual goals to promote healthy nutrition and reduce health disparities for Navajo children.


“Improving Sexual Health within Tribal Communities in the Great Plains”

NAU Academic Partner:  Naomi R. Lee, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry

Community Partner: Marcia O’Leary, BSN; Project Manager, Missouri Breaks Industries Research, Inc. (MBIRI)

Goal of Partnership: Build trusting relationships with community members from the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe (CRST) in South Dakota and community health representatives and health practitioners that work in the CRST community with the purpose of attaining insight and feedback on a potential testing and treatment intervention using simultaneous non-invasive diagnosis in urine samples.


“Contributing to the Formation of the Yavapai County Suicide Review Board”

NAU Academic Partner: Michelle Parsons, PhD, MA, SM, Assistant Professor, Anthropology Department

Community Partner: John M. Schuderer, MA; Chairperson, Suicide Prevention Coalition of Yavapai County

Goal of Partnership: Strengthen a fledging partnership between Northern Arizona University and the Suicide Prevention Coalition of Yavapai County to generate potential project ideas to address midlife distress in Yavapai County and initiate the formation of the Yavapai County Suicide Review Board, modeled on the Yavapai County Overdose Fatality Review Board.
